You must maintain social distancing in the workplace wherever possible.

Where the social distancing guidelines cannot be followed in full in relation to a particular activity, businesses should consider whether that activity needs to continue for the business to operate, and, if so, take all the mitigating actions possible to reduce the risk of transmission between their staff.

Mitigating actions include:

  • further increasing the frequency of hand washing and surface cleaning
  • keeping the activity time involved as short as possible
  • using screens or barriers to separate people from each other
  • using back-to-back or side-to-side working (rather than face-to-face) whenever possible
  • reducing the number of people each person has contact with by using ‘fixed teams or partnering’ (so each person works with only a few others)

Social distancing applies to all parts of a business, not just the place where people spend most of their time, but also entrances and exits, break rooms, canteens and similar settings. These are often the most challenging areas to maintain social distancing.

COVID-19 – Advice for Employers and Employees

Staying at home and social distancing

Current government advice is for everyone to stay at home, except in specific situations. This includes:

  • only going outside for food, health reasons or work (where this cannot be done from home)
  • staying 2 metres (6 feet) away from other people (‘social distancing’)
  • Groups of 4-6 people who do not share a household can meet outdoors, maintaining social distancing.
  • avoiding busy commuting times on public transport where travel is essential
  • washing your hands as soon as you get home

Employers should support their workforce to take these steps. This might include agreeing to more flexible ways of working.

Generic Risk Assessment for dealing with the current Covid-19 situation in the workplace

GENERIC RISK ASSESSMENT – COVID 19 RELATED

Covid-19 is a new illness that can affect your lungs and airways. It is caused by a virus called Coronavirus. Symptoms can be mild, moderate, severe or fatal.

This is a draft copy of a generic Risk Assessment for dealing with the current Covid-19 situation in the workplace. It is not likely to cover all scenarios and each employer should consider their own unique circumstances.  Much more specific assessments, such as that for health care workers, may look quite different although many of the principles would still be relevant.

Working through This Together

WORKING THROUGH THIS TOGETHER

During the Covid-19 (Coronavirus) emergency, employees of businesses and organisations permitted
to operate should go to work only if they cannot work from home.
The safety, health and wellbeing of everyone is of paramount importance and this is the primary
concern and purpose of this guide. We would like to applaud those employers who have moved
swiftly and with innovation, putting their employees’ health and wellbeing at the centre of their
operations in these new and uncertain times.
This guide sets out principles and practical steps that are vital for employers and employees to keep
themselves and their workplaces safe.
